STPI-Chennai

STPI-Chennai Centre become operational in June 1995 and started providing statutory services to IT /ITeS units registered under the STP Scheme and hardware manufacturing units under EHTP Scheme.

From August 1999, Chennai Centre was declared to function as an independent Centre having jurisdiction over the State of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

STP units have contributed an export turnover of Rs. 4,66,926 Crores Nationally, out of which export turnover of about Rs. 45,000 Crores are from 666 Units based at Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as on 31/03/2020..

STPI units have shown an exponential growth of 34 units in 1995 to 711 units in 2020.  Similarly exports have risen from 37 crores in 1995 to 47,500 crores (estimated) in 2020-21.

The Electronics hardware units have grown from 3 units in 1998 to 15 units in 2020. These EHTP units have reported an export of Rs. 260 crores.

After establishing sizeable industry base, this Chennai center put High Speed Data communication (HSDC) facilities during 1999 in Coimbatore and subsequently in Chennai, Madurai, Pondicherry and Tirunelveli.

Today STPI Chennai has spread its industry base across 10 districts of Tamil Nadu Viz., Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Thirunelveli, Salem, Vellore, Tirupur, Erode, Thanjavur. Though the major concentration of exporting companies are at Chennai, secondary cities are being seriously considered by the IT companies for cost advantage and good human resource.

Continuous interaction with industry and academia through various seminars, workshops has enabled the growth of industries in such a rapid way.
